So while reading around I have found that the consensus seems to strongly lean towards saving them in .png format. But looking at all your guys portfolio images I see that there all .jpg's. And then I just saw that all Stefs templates directly below this post are all .GIF's. So what do you think? Thanks a bunch! ![]() ---------------------------------------- Eric :~) Knowledge is Power ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by ewwatson at Jun 17, 2008 12:37:39 PM] |

I usually save as JPG -- I just have to make sure that I save the image at a high quality to avoid pixelization. ---------------------------------------- Benjamin Falk | student : designer : developer Twitter: falkencreative |

Whichever is smaller. PNG had issues in IE back when so I have never really used it, now I do not keep a porfolio either. But PNG is better supported, even transparency with scripts etc. It cums down to to which one looks better and which one is smaller. I did a brief on this as part of my lecture during the recent accessibility training. It was a map of Alaska and technically the better choice would have been JPG, but the text was not readable, so I chose GIF as thetext was better read. So there is no "Right" answer. Use your program to compare the quality and size of the images, also lower the number of colors as far as you can. Then choose between weight and quality, if it has text you may have to go with the quality and take a weight hit. PNG is not always the smaller file size. Also as I have said on may occasions, I prefer a Definition list. You can make the image and title the DT, and describe the site in the DD. You may want to say who or what they are and what you used... CSS, HTML Flash etc. |

It cums down to to which one looks better and which one is smaller. Ooooh... options... I don't do well with options... I much prefer a clear cut answer. Oh well, I'll just save it in all three formats and wiegh the costs. I already saved them as png's, but the text/heading's/etc aren't to clear. Your guy's jpg's actually seem to be a little sharper. That's contrary to what I've read. But eyes don't lie. Thanks for your thoughts guys. ---------------------------------------- Eric :~) Knowledge is Power |

What are you using? Both Fireworks and Photoshop have multi viewe payns that will allow you side by side vies of the image in versions you choose. original, one png, one gif and one jpg. Then you can compare size and look all at once. Then when you narrow it down you can adjust the format you chose further my mdifying the compression or color amounts... all side by side. |

Photoshop CS3. Really! I did not know that. Actually I know very little about Photoshop. I knew you could do side by side comparison of compression ratios - but not extension formats. Cool! I'm assuming it's probably in that same window right? I just did it yesterday but don't remember what PS calls it. That will make it much easier - thank you! ---------------------------------------- Eric :~) Knowledge is Power |

Thanks again for that tip Kyle - helped out a lot! I ended up changing them to jpgs. Blowing them up via Opera zoom I could tell a very small difference between the jpg and the png (the pngs were a tiny bit sharper). But at normal size the naked eye could see no diff. I was able to cut the file size in half with each pic by saving them as jpgs at very high quality - one shy of maximum quality. Each pic is down to only 5k to 7k now. ![]() ---------------------------------------- Eric :~) Knowledge is Power |

jpgs are for images that are layered, textured, have gradients, or require all of the colors. The good thing is that you can use 50 to70% quality with the save as web option in PS and get a good quality small file size image. I like to set PS to see the estimated download time if someone was using a 56.6K modem connection. pngs can be used for gradients as long as the image isn't complicated and is not very many colors. gifs are great for solid blocks of color and very small gradient images and will be smaller than pngs most of the time. They don't handle shading or shadows very well. So, long story short... :) a jpg would be the choice for website screenshots. ---------------------------------------- "The art of life lies in a constant readjustment to our surroundings." -Okakura Kakuzo Save the developers<!> Maine Webworks |

Quick question - do you guys sharpen the screenshot images once they have been resized down to 125px by 125px? I'm thinking it wouldn't do any good at that size. Hopefully because I don't want to redo them again. because there jpgs right - so I don't want to save and then resave the same image right? ---------------------------------------- Eric :~) Knowledge is Power |
