I followed the instructor's instruction in CSS tutorial Part 1 to create a web page using CSS, it worked but I saw these unexpected characters on the web page and couldn't understand what the cause is. [This is a help group, so of course we will help, so please use a title that expresses the problem so that others can find it later. As this sounds like a problem Expression users will have, I have made it a sticky and changed the title so people can find it. What program are you using? Edit: Those are BOM characters. You can read about those here (just a quick google turned this up this blog...there's more technical reading out there if you're interested). I get them in my files all the time when using Microsoft's Expression Web. The only time they cause trouble for me is when I'm trying to work with PHP. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Susie at Aug 6, 2008 8:13:31 AM] |

I used MS Expression Web for my CSS, MS Notepad for HTML and Mozilla Firefox as browser. |

Yeah, Expression Web sticks those BOM characters in every time. I'm using the latest version (2) and I still get them. You're supposed to be able to disable those, but I haven't been successful yet. http://www.microsoft.com/expression/news-pres...er/2008-04/Article01.aspx Scroll down to find the info about BOM. Edit: I was wrong. I did manage to get rid of the BOM characters by following the directions in that link. I guess I needed a refresh. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Susie at Aug 6, 2008 8:22:15 AM] |

I guess this feature isn't available on version 1, so may be I have to live with that for now meanwhile your advice proved really handy. Thanks. |

No problem. And if you think you'll be sticking with this software, maybe you could download the trial of version 2 so you can work without those BOM characters appearing. |

If the BOM is causing problems for you then you can open the html file via notepad or Wordpad and save it. This will remove the BOM but it will come back if you save it again via MS Expression Web. ---------------------------------------- Success is based on how much you spend. I`ve heard also for Dreamweaver that it can create some errors in html code of web sites. ---------------------------------------- Web Design Web Dizajneri |
