Best way to automate purchase and then allow download of the product?

Whats the best way to automate the purchase of a product (paperwork) and then allow the download of the product? Let me explain.

Once a week or so I get people asking if they can copy and paste all my text from my daycare website http://www.buildingblockshomedaycare.com for a fee or out of the kindness of my heart. Not to mention all the people that just take it without asking. I always say no and when I find a copycat I make them remove it all. So... I figure I mine as well try and make some money off all my hard work instead. There is still a lot of paper work needed to set up and run a home daycare that's not included in my site - like contracts and stuff like that.

So what I would like to do is charge like $99.99 for the whole package. I won't get rich of it, but I should make a good amount of spending money. There are lots and lots of daycare's that pop up each day, and even more than go under each day (they can't hack it). I figure they're sort of like shoes - everyone needs them and they burn out quick.

See where I'm going with this? All the paper work is done already. So all I need to do is build the website (easy) and set up the purchasing of the paper work and then the download process (not so easy). So whats the best way to accomplish this? Thanks for your thoughts!

EDIT - I already have John's post he made a while back bookmarked where he listed off these below - is what I need or is there something else I should look under?

pinnacle cart
cube cart
cs-cart
virtuemart for joomla
ECT Templates
PrestaShop
Shop-Script
X-Cart
AgoraCart

Re: Best way to automate purchase and then allow download of the product?

Those are all shopping carts and would work fine. I'm currently working with CubeCart and find it somewhat understandable.

Not sure if this would work for you, but I just purchased and installed Freelancer Panel . I'm loving it so far because of the ease of client tracking and invoicing. It even has payment modules that allows me to accept payments easily (no more sending Paypal invoices!!). And if I'm understanding correctly, it will allow you to invoice your customer and then after they pay, they get the download link. Just a thought.

EDIT:

Have you seen these?

I've been integrating PayPal into a website lately. You may want to check out the Instant Payment Notification (IPN) system. Great for automated online purchases.

Re: Best way to automate purchase and then allow download of the product?

Thank you - this is exactly what I need! smile payloadz is perfect but a little pricey . All payloadz does is be the middle man. You purchase the product - payloadz sends you to paypal - paypal sends payment confirmation to payloadz - the payloadz sends email with download link to you.

Can I some how side step the middle man? Does paypal send emails to purchasers with download links in them - no right? All I need is something really simple. I don't need a shopping cart or anything. I will only have one thing (one option) to buy - all the paperwork. So is there anything you guys know of that is like open source or something. That I could just put on my servers to handle it - a PHP script or something? If not, no biggy, payloadz seems like it would work perfect, just a bit pricey is all.

EDIT - E-junkie seems like maybe what I'm looking for! Same as payloadz but it's prices are much more reasonable. But again - a middle man. How can I side step him? Thanks!

EDIT - EDIT - Tim I looked at the paypal link you gave and read through it somewhat - would that be cutting the middle man? Seemed complicated though - too many steps. Hence the middle-man right!?

Yes. What Paypa'ls IPN does is send a string of data to a script (PHP ASP) on your server, saying that the transaction as been made to your account. Your server, satisfied that the customer has paid, provides the link (somehow) to the user.

Hi Tim smile

"(somehow) to the user" being the key words I guess uh? Anyone know of a PHP script that would accomplish this part? Thanks!

I found this too - It's free. But, being that it's free, it doesn't seem quite as easy to set up. http://www.oscommerce.com/

Re: Best way to automate purchase and then allow download of the product?

To keep it simple, I would just use Paypal. And here's how I'd set it up:

1. Customers view your site and read all about what you are offering.
2. Then they click on a "Buy Now" Paypal button.
3. They are directed to Paypal where they complete their purchase.
4. They are returned to a new page on your site because when you set up the Buy Now button, you told Paypal to which page you want customers sent after they pay.
5. This new page has a "thank you for your purchase message" and the download link (perhaps a zip file that's on your server?).

The only problem with that set up is that the zip file is not exactly secure. Someone determined enough could probably get to it. But for your average user, maybe it would be okay.

At least it's a starting point?

eeww, that is simple! Thanks Susie! Although, now that we've put all this effort (well a little at least) I don't think I'm going to do it. I looked around on the web this morning and there are a few free serves doing the same thing (ones for a cost as well). But one in particular, is completely free, and I'd be hard pressed to top it - couldn't actually. Plus in good conshents, I can't charge for something that others are giving away for free. That's just bad bisiness. Still got some good info and links out of it though, so thanks for all your help Susie and Tim!

Re: Best way to automate purchase and then allow download of the product?

Another problem with the approach Susie suggested is that the person who purchased the file could just give the link to someone else. But then again, once he's downloaded the file, he could send the file itself to whoever he chooses...
