What if: You get your domain name registered, you find your server, you get your site created, you do all you need to do and you get your site up and running and then After your site has been up for awhile, youve learned some stuff (e.g. HTML, a new design program or two, search engine tricks etc.) and youre not getting many hits and so you want to do the whole thing over again and go to a different server etc. What do you lose? Do you still have your domain name? Do you lose some kind of deposit or money in some other way? Does your butt fall off? How bad is it to start all over? |

What do you lose?: Not much at most your statistics, on your visitors and hits... not really important - but some advertisers want to know how many hits your site gets. Have to reset e-mails etc. Do you still have your domain name? : Yes, that has nothing to do with your server. The name stays yours usually. Do you lose some kind of deposit or money in some other way?: Only if your contract is not yet finished. Some hosts will return the money some will not. The domain name is stuck for 1 year or whatever..... you usually will not get money back but you can sell it. Does your butt fall off?: No, maybe your hair fall out or go grey... but my butt is still there (though thicker )How bad is it to start all over?: Depends on how much work. It is usually easierto start over with a new site then to upgrade the old I find. |

Thank You Kyle, I was mostly concerned about some kind of commitment like with cell phones. I had to sign up (and ultimately pay) for two years which I think is about normal and of course you lose if you switch. The choice is to continue ad infinitum trying to learn as much as I can about HTMl, different authoring programs, search engines etc. (ant this could go on for years) or go ahead at some point and jump in and see what happens. I just dont want to jump in quicksand. I want to retain some freedom and control without it costing me a lot of money because I was ignorant about the best way to jump. I imagine this worries a lot of folks like me and probably holds them back a long time. I wonder if there is some sort guide for people like me and my question. Obviously, the point at which we start (get our site online-or however you say that) will depend upon variables like how fancy, how much control, how large and things I dont yet know about but it would be possible for someone to define levels, criteria, options etc. and suggest at which points to jump in depending on what is desired and how much one is willing (time, money, education etc.) to invest. Does anyone know of such a guide? |

You have my sympathy. I did the very same thing - right up to paying for Site Build It. I registered 3 domain names...got all fired up, rarin to go and guess what? Nothing. Hated one idea, it was a spur of the moment impulse (gotta watch those) and now I'm waiting for the other two to just expire. Cancelled Site Build It too and registering that domain cost me $50. Ugh. Anyway, I said all that to say this - don't be too hard on yourself. From what I've gathered, your site will never be 'finished', the time you take tweaking (fixing) on it will pay off in the long run and most importantly - don't get overwhelmed by all the 'guru - you gotta do' information out there. Believe me, you'll be a lot more frustrated, your bank account will be VERY skinny and you will loose what hair you have left if you try to do what all the internet 'gurus' tell you to do. Not to say you can be sloppy. Just don't beat yourself up about what you don't know. You're in a good place to learn and you're asking the right questions. Hang in there. ![]() |
