Re: Alternative Editors for Web Development - [July 2008]

Updated: Added Eclipse for programmers and Coda for Mac users.

I have missed some suggested browsers as I do not always follow the thread, if you find one of interest you can always PM me with what you thought of it and the URL. Guess I missed Coda originally.

Re: Alternative Editors for Web Development - [July 2008]

Great thread. I've been considering moving away from DW CS3 but really don't know where to start (for a Mac). Been googling around looking at things then realized I needed to see what you veterans had to say...so I came here.

One that I thought looked interested and am surprised to not find on this list is Aptana. Any info on this one?

Re: Alternative Editors for Web Development - [July 2008]

Hi LSW,

I just downloaded to desktop the NVU Windows version. I have NEVER written HTML ever! I won't lie, I am nervous and really leary of where to start.

How do I even begin to build my site? (*existing but dormat for almost 2 years) I have graphics and no clue if I can convert them into HTML code? confused I am hoping that you might add a post or something that talks to the person like me, who is paralyzed by just downloading the program.

Don't get me wrong, my years were not wasted, I have been learning 3D and about to go into Mesh building as well. I just don't know if I have enough brain space to take on another major task....

Is there hope?

Hugs
Ariana

Re: Alternative Editors for Web Development - [July 2008]

With WYSIWYG editors you do not need to know HTML. but the code they do do is never that good.

HTML is easy if you just start doing it. I learned it in 2 days... and in the following year I learned web design we never once went back to it. That was it, 2 days.

You do not code images, you add them to the code so they show. The HTML is just the skeleton or structure supporing your images, content and Look & Feel.

Go to KillerSites proper and look around. scroll to the bottom and you will find a group of links to other KS sites on web design and CSS etc.

Then there is Idea22 which is KS's video tutorials.

W3Schools has HTML and CSS tutoirials that are very good.

Then there are the folks on the forum here.

As I said at WD, we are very supportive of Content Management Sytems. You can take a 3rd party template and have a site up you like in minutes or hours... then create your own template as you learn and replace it one day. My site is a 3rd person template... but programming for a living I have not taken the time to create my own as I always planned.

Lastly we have the folks here, I gave you a list of names of the regulars here who you can check out who would do a good job for you. Don't be a afraid to ask.
