Re: My 2 cents - Paintshop Pro vs. Photoshop

PSP isn't widely known, so that is one of the problems, but then again I haven't touched it since v3.0. (I still have that .exe saved on my external).

My only thing with PS is that it is not very user-friendly. You open it up and it's like "Ok buddy, I've done my job, now the rest is up to you". So you start playing with the filters or some other techniques and your like "That's it".

You really don't see the other options and blending effects, etc, etc, until you start to really use it.

Been using PS 7.0 for a while and feel comfortable with that, but can't couldn't tell if someone worked in PSP, PS, or Paint (well maybe paint).

I love the group!
I'd like to mention there is a chatroom on SCN designed and developed specifically for PSP users. I believe it would be a welcome addition to your group.
You already have a terriffic place to post questions and answers....if you'd like...you can also have a place to chat in real time to your friends and to others who are learning, need assistance, or have ideas to share!
Combining these two resources could greatly benefit all involved.

Find this chat:

Re: My 2 cents - Paintshop Pro vs. Photoshop

Hi
My first post. I found this site doing a Google search for the very query you have raised. Does the graphic material that is generated by PSP - I use version 9.01 differ in quality to that of Photoshop? Can a vector anti-aliased text that has been output as a .png file be of comparable quality to that of Photoshop full or Elements. I have Elements. I am a bit bogged down in work at present so haven't tried comparing Elements with PSP 9 yet.

I have found that PSP does not open my RAW files from my Canon Pro 1 camera and it can't handle large scans from medium format film whereas Photoshop Elements does. Otherwise I use PSP quite a lot and have learnt to use some of its extensive range of features -its not really easy to learn, although having a laptop running another copy with the Help file open whilst I work on my desktop is very useful. I also bought the set of booklets with DVD videos -that I think is unavailable now from Cranberry publishing.

Re: My 2 cents - Paintshop Pro vs. Photoshop

I am a LONG-term user of PaintShopPro (since it was free! - currently using X2), and have often wondered why Photoshop was the industry standard and why it cost so much. At last, I downloaded the 30-day trial of CS3 to find out.

I accept that familiarity makes an application seem much easier, and have tried to bear that in mind. Also, any views are based on the subset of functionality that one person uses. Here are my impressions...

Photoshop is a MUCH more solid, carefully developed piece of software, compared to PSP, which (especially since taken over by Corel) seems to be in the hands of the marketing men, not the developers - "This is the list of features we need by such a date - don't worry about whether it works or not - don't even bother to test it - you can always correct things with a subsequent release... after 6 months or so".

(eg I still haven't managed to install PSP on my laptop - messages like "Installation failed - please retry" do not help much.)

Photoshop loads faster, performs faster, and uses memory better (PSP seems to suffer memory leaks or something and eventually clobbers the PC, and needs a reboot).

Altogether more professional.

As to functionality, I reckon there is about a 90% overlap, with each having a few features which the other hasn't. Also, the way some features are implemented differ, and each has its share of good and bad.

Photoshop GOOD examples... Auto-align Layers, Filter gallery, Quick selection tool.
PSP GOOD examples... One-stop photo correction, saved selections.

User interface...

Photoshop is clean and crisp, but grossly utilitarian. It completely forbids toolbars for much-used functions, and seems obsessed with keyboard shortcuts (a very weird quirk for a GRAPHICS program!!). I found this reliance on menus and shortcuts to be both time-consuming and inefficient. It is difficult to remember exactly where a function is located, as opposed to spotting the icon in a toolbar.

PSP's tabbed images is so much better than Photoshop's invisible other images (unless you use separate windows).

Photoshop's Bridge is much more professional and useful and usable than PSP's ugly, malfunctioning browser.

Which would I choose?

If I were a professional, I would have to choose Photoshop - if only for the compatibility with other professionals, the file-types etc. But then the company would pay for it!!! Adobe's pricing is truly predatory - Photoshop is NOT worth that much money. I would put up with the UI inefficiencies.

Having to buy my own software, I cannot persuade myself to part with 600GBP for such a product. I really enjoyed its professionalism as a piece of software, compared to the tattiness of PSP, but not at that cost, and with the lack of toolbar buttons.
