Hi I have finally got around to trying to improve my site. I used a downloaded template to do so. So far I have only updated the index.html page as I need to make more changes for the other category pages. I am not too sure on the colours. Also, with Opera the footer does not seem to show... *** look at any other page to see what it was like before. I think a big improvement, but what does everyone else think? Any people into fitness / weight trianing / health etc here? I am not sure if the colours are too pastel. Cheers, Jon. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by admin at Dec 11, 2008 5:30:22 PM] |

Jon, Yes it looks VERY GOOD and it is an improvement. I remember your site because I gave you a review last time. I love the rounded corners also. The only thing I can say is that the menu could be centered. Be careful about the XHTML button tag. People don't usually post this on their site because it's like a boy scout badge. Also, the badge is saying that "Yes, this site is XHTML and it validates". You actually have 192 errors. The colors look good, the only thing is the orange background with the blue links (kinda hard to read). |

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I noticed this morning (on work pc) that the menu needs to be centred. Did not notice on a small monitor at home. I'll remove those badges from the footer (not changed the footer a great deal from the template). Spent ages trying to find a good css menu last night, and ended up using my old menu. Colours is tricky. I am wanting to keep the earthly orange colours to match with my logo. But maybe I should change to logo? Something simpler. Black and white ying yang would look too common though. Need to sort out my footer. The ad banners above the footer are causing me problems too, but I probably just need to move the code somewhere. Maybe I will remove the green background and enlarge the footer so that I can stick everything I want in there. Cheers, Jon. |

Actually, I just saw a really simple menu on cssplay.co.uk And what is reallyt funny, is that it is simple like the menu here. Maybe I should just have a simple text menu, with a bold underline, or maybe a slight change to background? What is cool with menus? My plan is to have one main horizontal menu on all pages, with a separate side menu for each category page. This will allow more links to be placed for categories than previous was possible, and keep the menu neat and tidy. I was looking into thos drop down, flyout, CSS, JS concoctions, but they seem to quickly get very complicated and fiddly to configue. Maybe text is king? |

And it is a pity. I think we need some sticky thread about webshapes or may be Stefan will consider to place webshapes banner somewhere up in forums. Many people just don't scroll down to see a reel of new templates on webshapes so it stays unnoticed. Or it will be enough to just add to the heading: "latest free templates from webshapes" ? ---------------------------------------- My blog ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by lm at May 24, 2007 7:20:44 AM] |

Actually, I did click on those templates when I was looking for a web template, but I did not realise that there were menus too, or from the link, I did not realise it was a killersites page! |

Spent ages trying to find a good css menu last night, and ended up using my old menu. J, also if you do a search for "css menus", you'll find alot. But good places to start are webshapes, CSS play, or even Dynamic Drive |

I did find a fair few, but they seemed to get overly complicated for my liking. At least the ones I liked did! I like to at least try to understand what I am doing (although most of what I do is copy, paste, and pray - that could be a good name for a site....) and many of the CSS solutions seem to have JS bits chucked in to make them work with all browsers etc. and I struggled with all of that. One that I did find, that was simple, and I really liked, spoilt it by charging a fee for the right to use right at the end of the article. I thought that it was open source, read all the way through, then saw that they were cahrging for rights to use the code. I want to keep it simple now. My next task is to find a way to dodge up an RSS feed for the site. I use Blogger and Pligg for 2 parts of the site /articles and subdomain community, and they provide RSS XML files, which I have found to be useful - people use these feeds and I get inbound links (wandering into SEO here...). Anyway, what I want to be able to do is to run some sort of program to create an XML feed for my site. But no idea how to go about it. I guess that would be the main advantage of using a CMS for the site? But my concern over that was not being able to generate the same URL's. So, some questions: 1. Is there a program that can create a RSS / XML file from an old-fashioed non-CMS site (i.e. just directories of html files). I have created an RSS file using GSiteCrawler, but the file is incomplete. Here is an example - tranquillizer.co.uk/rsssample.xml (I do need to update descriptions for all pages... another job for rainy day). 2. Is there a CMS that will be able to write URLs identical to the ones I currently use? I do like my current system, if only for its complete simplicity - I am using the php includes method, so have <?php include ('head.htm') ?> <?php include ('header.htm') ?> content etc. <?php include ('footer.htm') ?> then inside each include, there are further includes with specific parts, such as banner ads, related articles, etc. that can easily be changed. So, I do not really want to go over to Drupal etc. but if it mean that my site will be more future proof, easily be able to generate RSS files etc. then maybe that is something that I should consider more. |
