Feedback, Constructive Advice

A) scratch that - not spam.

B) Read before you post: Validate before asking for a review

Re: Feedback, Constructive Advice - www.SilkSuitStore.com

77 validation errors -and please explain to me how exactly "my personal site" and "sales are slow" go together?

I have a personal site. It's my blog. That's where I keep friends and family and whoever cares updated on my life.

I have a business website with which I"m hoping to get customers for my webdesign business.

Both those pages are totally separated.

Re: Feedback, Constructive Advice - www.SilkSuitStore.com

I am new to this, so I ask that the "expericenced" members be constructive and detailed......Most of the 40 year old plus generation did not grow up with IM's, email, and so forth. Likewise, it is difficult to understand a message/reply like this one.

For instance, I have no idea what 77 validation errors is refering to. Also, I do not understand why you listed spam on this post.

I am simply asking for some clear feedback.

Thank you,

Todd

Re: Feedback, Constructive Advice - www.SilkSuitStore.com

Thelma,

My comment was simply refering to a site I developed personally foy my business. In other words, a site NOT developed for someone other than myself.

I grew up in a time before the Internet. The concept of sharing personal information on the world wide web is somewhat foreign to us 40 somethings.

I hope this answers your question.

Re: Feedback, Constructive Advice - www.SilkSuitStore.com

Hi Todd,

You'll find that a lot of the regular members here refer to validating your HTML and CSS. http://validator.w3.org/ This is because having errors in the code may cause multiple display problems and accessibility issues. Killersites is dedicated to helping people learn how to design websites that are accessible to people with disabilities, as well as search engines.

Unfortunately, we've had issues where people will come in here, post asking for a review, and then never return to take the advice given. It was clear they were here just to put their link out there and get some traffic. Obviously, you are not one of them. smile

I took a peek at your code and I see that you are mixing a lot of styles in with your HTML. You should really take those all out and put them in a separate CSS stylesheet. And some of the names given to your divs concern me because they aren't very descriptive. Div "e38" might be hard to remember on down the road when it comes time for updates. It's better to use names that are easy to remember.

Here is a report of the validation errors Thelma mentioned.

There are so many things going on here that I don't really know where to start. So, let me at least mention 2 things:

1. Over on the right, "Custom Tailored Clothing and Accessories" which appears under Silk Suit Store is very difficult for me to read. You need more color contrast there.

2. All of your page titles (ie: How Do I Order?, Men's Suit Catalog, etc.) should be either <h1> or <h2> tags.

I hope this helps explain a little bit. smile

I turned 46 earlier this month. My parents didn't even have a colored TV until I was in my late teens, and no phone until I was in my early 20s - What exactly is your point?

Re: Feedback, Constructive Advice - www.SilkSuitStore.com

TN,

It's not anything against you. We get alot of people asking us to review their website and 9 times out of 10 the first thing we look at is there code.

We regulars all believe in web standards and accessibility. So we are going to see if your html code & css code validate. (See what Sue was talking about)

Now as for your site. The template seems a little 90's to me. There are some good CSS based templates @ www.webshapes.org.

Also the images (all of them) seem to be a little blurry and not very crisp.

I would say, start over again. If you site looks a little more professional then I would buy a suit from you.

But I do like the how the site is organized. It is easy to find what you are looking for and you don't have to click a thousands times to get to it.

Re: Feedback, Constructive Advice - www.SilkSuitStore.com

I guess I shouldn't even raise my hand *hoping they don't look at my profile page b-day date*

Anyway, I guess I have to play devil advocate and say this:

It gets under my skin too when we get people asking for reviews that have poor code. But what if the person on the other end doesn't know what validating is? Has no clue what the errors mean? Or just put there site up and will probably take days to fix the code to get that green light?

Kyle's post is very informative but for someone who is new, it doesn't give them they "How & Why" of it all. @Kyle, I think it would be great to see some articles in that post about why it's important to use the validator. Maybe some info about how doctypes work with validator, how they can fix errors, etc.

And of course we are going to always get people that still come with 99 V errors, that's just the nature of the beast. All and all, I'm just trying to say that it would be great if they validated their sites, but we will still welcome you. Well in case you are spam devilish .

Then we will chop you up into little bitty pieces and eat you.

Just my 2 cents.
