March 4, 2017

Coming for summer 2017, StudioWeb will be offering a Python certification course. Like all our certificates, it is a two stage process to be StudioWeb certified:

  1. Students must successfully pass the StudioWeb Python course.
  2. Upon passing, students are eligible to take the Python Certification exam.

Printable certificates with unique verifiable IDs, will be issued to those passing the certification exam. Certificate IDs are unique to the certificate and are verifiable live against our StudioWeb certificate database.

Thanks!

Updates to StudioWeb for 2017

February 17, 2017

We’ve released some very significant updates to StudioWeb this year, both in terms of the course content, and the application. Here is a short list:

  1. StudioWeb 2 will be retired this year, and all new classrooms will be deployed to the StudioWeb 3.
  2. We are renaming (and updating) Beginners HTML to HTML5 since it is much more than a beginners course.
  3. We are releasing a NEW Python course.
  4. We are now providing a grading rubric for the projects – usable even for teacher who don’t know code.
  5. We are adding to the HTML5 course projects, including lessons from teachers who have used SW in classrooms.
  6. Student time tracking will be back this year.
  7. We are providing a new Teacher’s QuickStart Guide that includes classroom activities (note taking, paired coding, peer-to-peer tutoring etc), the new grading rubric, and other useful things to jump start a teacher.

Business of coding tip #1: A great way to improve your coding – take a break!

February 16, 2017

I’ve been building websites and building apps since the early 1990’s. In that time, I’ve learned many different languages, and explored many different strategies when it comes to writing good code.

This is going to be my first blog post on the business of coding. In this series, I will not be getting into the finer details of writing code (I cover that easily in my courses,) instead, I will talking about things that only 20+ years of development experience can teach you. But if you follow this series, you will learn these useful tips much more quickly!

Tip #1: Giving time for your mind to rest will pay dividends in your coding and business career.

Now watch the video.

What do you think about codathons/hackathons?

February 11, 2017

Someone on my YouTube channel asked:

What do you think about codathons/hackathons?

My answer:

I am not a big fan of them because there is so much work out there. You could be getting paid to code (and learn) rather that doing a hackathon.

In addition, the only way you get coding chops, is by building real apps for real clients. One thing a lot of developers miss, is that being able to manage a project has a lot to do with managing non-nerd clients … you only get that experience in the real world.

I used to see the same sort of thing in martial arts, where certain styles are really big into drills and exercises. The problem is, that they put much less (if any) time into actual fighting.

… Then they take a beating when they are unlucky enough to mix it up with someone who spent his time sparring, rather than running through drills.

That said, the more code you write the better, so codathons will improve your abilities no doubt … but nothing compares to the real thing. Pick your analogy! 🙂

How to Teach Code in the Classroom

November 29, 2016

code in the classroom

In 2010, I decided to build an app that would make teaching and learning code easy, for middle school students and up. The first version hit schools a year later – that’s when the app started to really take shape.

Since that time, StudioWeb has gone through many changes reflecting our experience, as more and more schools used StudioWeb in classrooms. This summarizes what we’ve learned:

  1. Gamification of the learning process is important. StudioWeb was gamified from the start, but we expanded the features over time, making StudioWeb even more engaging.
  2. You need to let teachers and students tell you what works, and what doesn’t work with your app and courses. Bugs were crushed, features added AND some removed.
  3. Visit schools, talk to students and teachers. Refined accordingly.
  4. Continually update incrementally to gauge each change properly.
  5. Develop courses that integrate with your app based on years of input from users, and from raw data derived from people using your system.

Result:

StudioWeb is now a powerful turnkey system that makes teaching and learning code amazingly easy and fun. Students are super engaged, and teachers are relaxed as they facilitate StudioWeb based classrooms.

Hi,

I recently watched Google’s presentation of their Pixel phones. The thing is, it wasn’t really about the phone, it was much more about Google’s push into more advanced Ai through Google Assistant.
